On July 23, 2017, we dry-camped at Round Lake Vineyards & Winery in Round Lake, MN. We found this hidden gem through Harvest Hosts, a service which networks private businesses to invite self-contained RVers (like ourselves!) to stay the night & experience their venues. After driving all day from Kewaunee, WI, we were able to pull in, set up, and explore the vineyard & winery.
Violet set off on her bike right away to scope the area; Jay and I followed at a more leisurely pace. We decided to explore the winery first; it was hot and humid and we wanted to check out the beverage list! While we were sampling the winery’s varietals, we received a warm welcome from Scott Ellenbecker, the owner. The winery’s staff was all smiles and the service was excellent. My favorite Round Lake varietal was the semi-sweet white “Brianna”. Jay loved “Temptation Apple” so much that he actually bought a bottle to enjoy on his own! Before being devoured by gnats & mosquitos, we snapped the above picture on our way back to the RV.
Violet continued to happily bike around the vineyard while Jay enjoyed his wine and I took a nap. That evening, an excited Violet woke me up to alert me to the presence of fireflies – her first-ever encounter with them! She captured one in her bug habitat for closer examination. Alas, the bug perished by the end of the next day.
We’d like to give a HUGE “thank you” to Scott and staff at Round Lake Vineyards & Winery for the refreshing beverages & perfect closing to our long day!
